I have bought myself a new router... For more than $100.
Now, I know what you’re thinking; why did I sink so much money into a router when a cheaper alternative could be found?
I thought so too until today, when I drove home. I was nowhere near my driveway - nay, the intersection nearby - when my phone alerted me to the fact that it’s connected to the 2.4GHz band on my router.
What.
And on 1-2 bars, no less. And get this - it was still fast enough to load a page.
I am now His Data Excellency Satoshi. My neighbors are now my network peasants.
SERVE ME, HEATHENS. FOR I WILL BRING YOU NET SATISFACTION.

There honestly aren’t many good 802.11ac options that cost much less than $100 anyway. I’d get one, but I’m cheap so I’m still using a $20 refurbished 802.11n router. It has gotten tons better since I found that someone made a custom firmware for it (it can’t run any of the usual suspects, but apparently some Russian has a lot of time on his hands.)

Just ‘more than $100?’ Most places want nearly $300 for that router ...

Even I loaded up Merlin on this ASUS partly to see if it’s any better than the stock firmware installed on the time.
It also came with WTFast, something the stock firmware lacked (despite it saying on the box.)
Also, I’m afraid to ask, but which Russian is this?

Let’s just say 2 hours worth of haggling wasn’t worth the pain.

Might I inquire as to what router this is your excellency? Please forgive me, for my peasant tech knowledge is unfamiliar with such quality devices.

RT-AC3100. Now go, my subject, may you be enlightened on the virtues of high speed.

Ough. That is quite the price point for such a device. My peasant wallet cannot shill out for such glory. How dost one haggle down that magnificence to affordability?

My ASUS router has been quite good as well, not quite as good as this one would be but doing a good job. Love me some 5 ghz. It’s done great networking all my drives too, the usb 3.0 on it is crazy helpful.

This one obviously isn’t as powerful, but it’s done a great job for me once we got it dialed in nice. Biggest issue was my devices defaulting to the 2.4ghz when the 5ghz was sitting there at full strength. Got those settings down and it’s been solid. I have 2 networked drives running through it too that are connected to up to 5 devices at any time.

I recently paid (just barely) over $100 for a router myself... the WRT-1200AC does *NOT* have the wireless performance of the big ASUS beasts, but with it’s dual-core 1.3GHZ ARM cpu, gigabit ethernet, e-SATA, and USB3 it’s an absolute BEAST at NAS compared to the competition.
